The Leipzig Creative in Residence Program will reopen after a pause. The program is aimed at artists, creatives, and cultural practitioners from Japan, as well as individuals whose work has a thematic connection to Japan. It is open to, among others, visual artists, designers, photographers, performers, musicians, writers, and researchers. Residencies of at least two months up to one year are planned for the period 2026–2027 in Leipzig, in cooperation with Das Japanische Haus e.V. Why are you actually called “the Japanese House”?
One of the questions we are asked most frequently is this one – occasionally certainly with a small side remark. I would like to briefly put our activities of the past two years into context and address this question in the process. In fact, the name is both a blessing and a curse. We attract a fairly classic audience: people from the neighborhood, friends of the Küfa concept, artists, students, and so on. At the same time, it is important to us to keep the audience as heterogeneous as possible. Through the name, people also come to us who are learning Japanese, have been attending a karate class for years,…

Beyond the Frame
The exhibition Beyond the Frame presents works by artists Dayoung Jung and Yunseon Jeong, who explore themes of identity, exclusion, and the boundaries between mainstream and marginal cultures. Using fictional portraits, K-pop, and fragmented visual worlds, they create powerful installations that make the invisible visible and challenge social norms. The exhibition can be seen on May 22, 24, 29, and 31, each day at 6 PM. As always, there will be Küfa (community kitchen) or simply a relaxed evening in good company. We look forward to your visit!
Looking Back: Exhibition by George and Josh
Over the past few months, we hosted a variety of events: a beginner’s salsa course, a poster workshop using different printing techniques, reading evenings, and family activities. Now, we’d like to take a moment to look back at a special exhibition by two people who are close to us. After photographer Mai Nakama exhibited her impressive work with us a few months ago, it felt only natural to encourage our regular guests and photographers, George and Josh, to follow her example. We were truly delighted to share their talent with all our visitors!

Photo Exhibition by Mai Nakama
We are pleased to present a photo exhibition by Yamaguchi-born photographer Mai Nakama from October 24th to November 2nd. Here is her message to all interested: “I am a Japanese photographer. I have taken photos all over Japan. I would be happy to introduce the scenery, people and experiences I have seen in Japan through my photos. I hope that this will lead to communication with the people of Germany.” https://nakamamai.com/work https://www.instagram.com/mai_nakayan/
